Temples, Tigers and the Taj Mahal

The northern plains of India have always provided a vast array of sites, sounds and architectural wonders. In one comprehensive tour, see the bustling bazaars of Delhi and Jaipur, the Taj Mahal at Agra, the deserts of Rajasthan, the bathing ghats of Varanasi and the erotic temples of Khajuraho. There is also the option to extend your tour with five nights in legendary Kathmandu in Nepal.

Days 1-2 : UK – Delhi

Fly overnight to Delhi and transfer to the hotel. Enjoy the rest of day at leisure. (N.B. lunch and dinner is not included today).

Day 3 : Delhi

Enjoy a tour of Old Delhi starting with a drive past the Red Fort before a walk through Chandni Chowk to India’s largest mosque, Jama Masjid. We also visit Gandhi Smiriti’s residence and Qutab Minar Complex before a photo stop at India Gate, President’s House and Parliament Building.

Day 4 : Delhi – Udaipur

Fly to Udaipur. The afternoon is at leisure before our sunset boat cruise on Lake Pichola, which is fringed with hills, palaces, havelis, ghats and temples. It is also the site of the Lake Palace Hotel and Jagmandir Island Palace.

Day 5 : Udaipur

Visit Sahelion Ki Bari (the Garden for the Maids of Honour), the Folk Museum, Mewar Art Gallery and the City Palace followed by a walk through the streets and local shops. Our evening meal includes an enchanting dinner overlooking Lake Pichola.

Day 6 : Udaipr – Jodhpur

Travel to Jodhpur the second largest city in Rajasthan, located on the edge of the Thur Desert and visit the small town of Ranakpur to see India’s largest Jain temple complex in Ranakpur, which dates back to the 15th century en-route.

Day 7 : Jodhpur

Visit the massive Mehrangarh Fort and Umaid Bhawan Palace Museum. We also take a Tuk Tuk to a local restaurant for lunch before strolling through the local vegetable and spice markets.

Day 8 : Jodhpur – Jaipur

Drive to Jaipur, also known as the ‘Pink City’. This afternoon, we stop off at the Choti Choper for some shopping.

Day 9 : Jaipur

Enjoy a photo stop at Hawa Mahal (Palace of the Winds) and explore the palace and fortress of Amer. After trying our hand at some block printing and carpet weaving we visit the City Palace and Jantar Mantar Observatory. In the evening, enjoy traditional dancing and dinner at a local restaurant.

Days 10-11 : Jaipur – Ranthambore

Travel to Ranthambore National Park, which specialises in tiger conservation. The forests around the Fort were once the private hunting grounds for the Maharajas of Jaipur. Enjoy game viewing by jeep this afternoon and the following day.

Day 12 : Ranthambore – Agra

We board the train to Bharatpur and then continue by road to Agra, stopping at Fatehpur Sikri, a magnificent fortified ghost city built in 1569 by Emperor Akbar en-route.

Day 13 : Agra

Rise early and arrive by horse drawn carriage ‘tongas’ to view the impressive Taj Mahal in all its glory at sunrise. We then return to the hotel for breakfast. Later, a visit to see traditional stone inlay work at the marble factory is followed by a visit to Agra Fort.

Day 14 : Agra – Khajuraho

We board the Shatabdi Express train to Jhansi and then travel by road through the rural Indian countryside via Orchha to Khajuraho. Enjoy a fascinating cultural dancing show in the evening.

Day 15 : Khajuraho – Varanasi

We tour the temples of Khajuraho, one of India’s major attractions. Tour the western group of Khajuraho Temples, which consists of the Mahadeo Temple, Vamana Temple and Javari Temple. Later, fly to Varansi and in the evening take a rickshaw ride to the River Ganges to witness the ‘Pooja’ ceremony of Ganja Aarti.

Day 16 : Varanasi

Take an early morning boat ride on the River Ganges to view the ghats of Varanasi at sunrise. Visit the Buddhist sites at Sarnath, where Lord Buddha preached his first sermon. Enjoy a tour of Varanasi before returning to the hotel for breakfast.

Day 17 : Varanasi – Kathmandu

Fly to Kathmandu and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to acclimatise to the altitude.

Day 18 : Kathmandu

Explore two of the most significant sites in Nepal – the Swayambhunath Stupa located on top of a hill, which is often referred to as the ‘monkey temple’ and the Boudhanath Stupa, which is the largest stupa in Nepal.

Day 19 : Bhaktapur day tour

Travel to the 9th century town of Bhaktapur, a treasure trove of medieval art and architecture. Visit the Golden Gate and the Palace of 55 Windows. We also visit the temple of Changu Narayan, which is the oldest temple in the valley dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Return to Kathmandu.

Day 20 : Patan day tour

Travel to the second largest city in Nepal, Patan, located on the southern bank of Bagmati River. Visit the World Heritage listed Royal Palace and Durbar Square, which is encompassed by temples, houses and shrines. Return to Kathmandu.

Day 21 : Dhulikhel day tour

Enjoy the morning at leisure. After lunch, enjoy the spectacular view of the Himalayas as we travel to Dhulikhel, visiting the small village of Thimi en-route. In Dhulikhe, explore the Newari houses and the local market. Return to Kathmandu.

Days 22-23 : Kathmandu – UK

Transfer to Kathmandu Airport and fly overnight to the UK via Delhi, arriving home the following day filled with many happy memories. (N.B. there is a stopover in Delhi of approx 12 hours)
