From stunning scenery to amazing architecture, Sri Lanka is a tropical paradise island steeped in history and culture. Marvel at magnificent temples, see the UNESCO world heritage listed rock fortress at Sigiriya, discover the fascinating caves at Dambulla and explore the ruined cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. Also search for the wilderness at Sinharaja Forest Reserve and see the elephants at Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage.
Days 1-2 : London – Colombo
Fly overnight to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city.
Day 3 : Colombo – Sigiriya
Visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, which was established in 1975 and now home to 65 elephants before continuing to Sigiriya.
Day 4 : Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Sigiriya
Explore the magnificent UNESCO world heritage listed rock fortress also known as ‘Lion Rock’ built by King Kasyapa. We also stroll through the three distinct landscaped gardens; the Water Gardens, Boulder Gardens and Terrace Gardens. Later, travel to the UNESCO world heritage listed site of Polonnaruwa, which was the former capital of Sri Lanka from the 11-13th centuries and home to well-preserved stupas, frescoes and statues. We also visit the rock temples at Gal Vihara before returning to Sigiriya.
Day 5 : Sigiriya – Anuradhapura – Sigiriya
Travel to the UNESCO world heritage listed city of Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated ancient cities. We visit the city’s most revered relic; the sacred Bo Tree which was planted 2,250 years ago before returning to Sigiriya..
Day 6 : Sigiriya – Kandy
We travel to the sacred Buddhist city of Kandy visiting the Dambulla Rock Temple, which dates back to the 1st century and the spice garden in Matale en-route. We also visit a Batik factory before arriving in Kandy.
Day 7 : Kandy
Visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens before continuing to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. We also explore the remains of the Royal Palace; now the National Palace. Enjoy a cultural dinner and dance show in the evening.
Day 8 : Kandy – Nuwara Eliya
Travel to Nuwara Eliya, the ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, visiting a tea plantation, tea factory and Victoria Park en-route.
Day 9 : Nuwara Eliya – Yala National Park
Continue to Yala (Ruhuna) National Park, which is home to a large number of elephants, leopards, sambhur, wild buffalo and over 130 species of bird. Enjoy a jeep safari in the evening.
Day 10 : Yala National Park
Enjoy a morning and evening jeep safari in Yala National Park.
Day 11 : Yala National Park – Galle
We leave Yala National Park and visit the Hummanaya Blow Hole, Mulgirigala Rock Temple, Dikawella Wevurukannala Temple and see the stilt fisherman at Weligama. We then continue driving along the coastline to Galle
Day 12 : Galle
Sightseeing today includes a tour of the city and stroll around the lighthouse where we see traditional lace makers and woodcarvers. We also visit the UNESCO world heritage listed Dutch Fort, also known as Galle Fort.
Day 13 : Galle – Colombo
Enjoy the morning at leisure. After lunch, we travel to Colombo and visit the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery en-route.
Day 14 : Colombo
Enjoy a city tour of Colombo starting with a visit to Fort District, which is the historic centre of the city. We then continue to Pettah Market and visit the Dutch Church of Wolfendhall, Kelaniya Buddhist Temple, Davatagaha Mosque and the Colombo and Natural History Museums.
Day 15 : Colombo – UK
Fly to the UK, arriving home later the same day.
