Days 1-2 : UK – Hanoi

Fly overnight to Hanoi.

Day 3 : Hanoi

Hanoi, also known as the ‘Paris of the Orient’ is a charming and richly historic city with lakes, parks and shaded boulevards. We visit a local market to purchase ingredients before taking part in a cooking class to learn some traditional recipes which we enjoy for lunch. Sightseeing later today includes visits to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum (closed Sep-Dec), Stilt House, One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature. We also enjoy a walking tour of the Old Quarter and a drive around Hoan Kiem Lake. In the evening, we dine with the editor of the Culinary Art magazine.

Day 4 : Hanoi – Ha Tay – Hanoi

Travel to Ha Tay and enjoy a packed lunch at local village en-route and learn about the culinary specialties of the region. Return to Hanoi and in the evening, we enjoy a special musical performance.

Days 5-6 : Halong Bay Junk Cruise – Hue

Drive to Halong Bay, the ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of Vietnam. Relax and enjoy seafood meals onboard. Stay overnight on the traditionally designed junk boat and continue cruising between the nearby islands the following day. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Halong Bay is one of Vietnam’s most iconic attractions and features more than 3,000 limestone karsts rising from the Gulf of Tonkin dotted with caves, grottoes, reefs, forests and lakes. Return to Hanoi in the afternoon, driving through the striking rural countryside of the Red River Delta. We then fly to Hue, the former historic capital during the Nguyen Dynasty.

Day 7 : Hue

We stroll around Dong Ba Market with a local chef to purchase ingredients before taking part in a cooking class where we learn some traditional recipes which we will enjoy for lunch. We also take a cyclo ride to the Imperial Citadel - the centrepiece of the royal empire which was extensively damaged during the Vietnam War. In the evening, we enjoy dinner at a restored royal house.

Day 8 : Hue – Hoi An

Visit the Tu Duc and Khai Dinh Royal Tombs. We also meet the local monks and learn about their experiences and way of life followed by a vegetarian lunch. Later, travel to the UNESCO listed town of Hoi An stopping at the Cham Museum, Marble Mountains and China Beach en-route.

Day 9 : Hoi An

We stroll through Tra Que, a vegetable village and join the farmers to learn about their work and see their farming techniques. After lunch at a local farmer’s house, we enjoy a walking tour of Hoi An and visit one of the oldest homes, which is still occupied by the descendants of the merchants that built it over 200 years ago. Also visit the Japanese Bridge, Hoi An Market and a local Chinese Pagoda.

Day 10 : Hoi An

Fly to Saigon. Sightseeing today includes a visit to the former Presidential Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the French-style Post Office. We also stroll down Rue Catinat to see the Opera House as well as the former Hotel de Ville. In the evening, we enjoy a private cooking class at the Saigon Culinary Art Centre.

Day 11 : Mekong Delta day tour

Travel to My Tho and enjoy a cruise on the Mekong River to explore the delta, also known as the ‘Rice Basket’ of Vietnam. Visit floating markets, villages, home industries and plantations as well as Thoi Son Island and Vinh Trang Pagoda. We also enjoy a ride on a horse-drawn cart and sample delicious fruits whilst listening to traditional music at Phong Phu Garden returning to Saigon. The Mekong Delta is primarily rural; however, it is the most densely populated area in Vietnam. Life revolves around the river as people live, trade and travel along the river. The area’s rich and fertile lands are perfect for growing rice, coconuts, vegetables and tropical fruits. The Mekong Delta gives a perfect glimpse into how life once was. before. Our evening meal will be at the former residence of the US Ambassador, followed by violin and piano concert.

Days 12-13 : Saigon – UK

Fly overnight to the UK, arriving home the following day filled with many happy memories.

    Day 1: Arrive Phnom Penh
    Transfer to your hotel in Phnom Penh.

    Day 2: Phnom Penh
    Today, choose between a tour to Toul Sleng Museum of Genocidal Crimes and the Killing Fields OR free time at the local markets for some shopping. In the afternoon visit the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and National Museum followed by a sunset cruise on the Mekong River. (B,L)

    Day 3: Phnom Penh – Siem Reap
    Fly to Siem Reap. Drive to the fortified city of Angkor Thom. Start at the Southern Gate and continue to The Bayon, beautifully carved with numerous striking faces. Also visit the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Elephant Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King. This afternoon explore the magnificent Angkor Wat until sunset. This temple took 30 years to build and represents the Khmer civilisation at its greatest (B,L).

    Day 4: Siem Reap
    Enjoy a boat trip on Tonle Sap this morning visiting the floating fishing villages. After lunch, visit Bantey Srei, a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva and Bantey Samre. (B,L)

    Day 5: Siem Reap
    Enjoy a morning visit to the Small Circuit including Kravan, Banteay Kdei and Ta Prohm Temple, which is undoubtedly the most atmospheric ruin at Angkor, having been swallowed by the jungle. The temple is cloaked in dappled light with crumbling towers. This afternoon, transfer to Siem Reap Airport for your onward flight. (B)

    Day 3: Lantau Island
    Travel by ferry across the Victoria Harbour to Silvermine Bay and visit beautiful Cheung Sha beach. This is followed by Tai O Fishing Village, where many homes are built on stilts. Then travel to Ngong Ping Plateau to see the Giant Buddha and explore Po Lin Monastery where you will enjoy a vegetarian lunch. Later, visit the culturally themed Ngong Ping Village before ending the day with a spectacular ride aboard the Skyrail cable car. (B,L) If the cable car is cancelled due to poor weather or any other reason, alternative transportation will be arranged.
