Bagan

Travel to a country that has been relatively unexplored by tourists and discover a culture a world away from your own. Burma (Myanmar) is a hidden gem of Southeast Asia; on this tour you will uncover all that this magical country has to offer. Start in the capital Rangoon (Yangon) where you will visit local markets, the National Museum and relax at Kandawgyi Lake.

Visit the ancient city of Bagan, on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, home to over 2,200 ancient temples and pagodas. Mix with the locals to experience daily village life and enjoy the magnificent view from the top of Mt. Popa. Continue to Mandalay, the religious centre for Buddhism and home to over 300,000 of the country’s monks and nuns. Explore the pagodas and monasteries located here. End your journey at Inle Lake where you can take in the beautiful landscapes before returning to Yangon. This tour allows you to experience the traditional way of Burmese living and marvel at landscapes that have remained unchanged for centuries.

Days 1-2 : UK – Rangoon ((Yangon)

Fly overnight to Rangoon ((Yangon), the former capital of Burma (Myanmar).

Day 3 : Rangoon (Yangon)

Sightseeing today incudes a city tour of Rangoon (Yangon), starting with a visit to Sule Pagoda followed by a walk through downtown Rangoon (Yangon) with its faded colonial atmosphere to visit the beautiful post office. We observe the locals going about their daily activities at Mahabandoola Park before visiting the National Museum, which is home to priceless ancient artefacts. After lunch, we visit the Bogyoke Market and stroll through the Indian Quarter to see the many street vendors selling everything you can think of! We relax at Kandawgyi Lake and enjoy the sunset at the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda.

Day 4 : Rangoon (Yangon) – Bagan

We fly to Bagan, on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list, and upon arrival visit Nyaung U Market and Shwezigon pagoda, which is the most important pagoda in Bagan. We also visit Htilominlo Temple, Mingalar Zedi pagoda and take a short drive through the scenic countryside to Minnanthu village.

Day 5 : Bagan – Mt Popa – Bagan

We travel to Mt Popa, stopping along the way at a local village to learn how palm sugar is produced. Arriving at Mt Popa we visit Taung Kalat, which is a Buddhist Monastery located at the top of the mountain followed by lunch at the mountain resort. We return to Bagan and visit the temples of Manuha, Nanpaya, Gubyaukgyi and Tayoke Pyay.

Day 6 : Bagan – Mandalay

We fly to Mandalay and transfer to Amarapura where we visit Mahaghandayon Temple, which is the home to several thousand young monks as well as a place of monastic study and strict religious discipline. We continue to U Bein Bridge and drive to Mandalay. After lunch, we visit Mahamuni pagoda, Golden Palace Monastery, Kuthodaw pagoda and watch the sunset at Mandalay Hill.

Day 7 : Mandalay

We transfer to the jetty and travel by boat to Mingun to visit the Mingun Mantara pagoda. Mingun is home to the world’s largest ringing bell, weighing over 87 tonnes. We return to Mandalay for lunch and then continue to Ava where we travel by horse-drawn carriage to visit Bagaya Monastery and the remains of the Royal Palace. We also visit Sagaing Hill before returning to Mandalay.

Day 8 : Mandalay – Nyaung Shwe (Inle Lake)

We fly to Heho and transfer to Pindaya where we visit Pindaya Cave and Lake. The caves are a Buddhist pilgrimage site and house thousands of Buddha images. We also visit a local home-run umbrella and mulberry paper production business. After lunch, we continue to Nyaung Shwe where Inle Lake is situated and enjoy the afternoon at leisure.

Day 9 : Nyaung Shew (Inle Lake)

We enjoy a boat trip on Inle Lake and observe the beautiful surroundings as we make our way to the floating markets and floating gardens. After lunch, we visit the Indein pagoda complex.

Day 10 : Nyaung Shew (Inle Lake)

We visit the weaving village of Inpawkon and the famous Phaung Daw Oo pagoda. After lunch, we visit Nagphechaung Monastery, also known as the ‘Jumping Cat Monastery’, where cats are trained to leap through hoops by monks during the scripture recitals.

Day 11 : Nyaung (Inle Lake) – Rangoon (Yangon)

We fly to Rangoon (Yangon) and upon arrival visit Gaba Aye pagoda and Mahapasana Cave. After lunch, we visit Botataung pagoda and Nanthida jetty. In the evening, we wander around Chinatown and stroll through the night markets.

Days 12-13 : Rangoon (Yangon) – UK

Fly overnight to the UK, arriving home the following day.

Also visit the National Monument at the Lake Gardens before continuing to the beautiful National Mosque. The tour the drives past the Railway Station and makes a stop at Independence Square. Finally enjoy an intriguing drive around Chinatown. A photo stop at the magnificent Petronas Twin Towers will also be included. The afternoon is at leisure. (B)
