{"id":1912,"date":"2016-03-02T09:23:26","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T09:23:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1912"},"modified":"2018-04-10T09:56:04","modified_gmt":"2018-04-10T08:56:04","slug":"dagu-glacier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/china\/dagu-glacier\/","title":{"rendered":"Dagu Glacier Improves Sichuan Tourism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A glacier in Sichuan Province is improving local tourism to a national park in the valleys northwest of\u00a0Chengdu.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nDagu Glacier, formed on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and located in Heishui county, is attracting on average 140,000 tourists every year.\u00a0The name &#8216;Dagu&#8217; translates to &#8216;glacier&#8217; in Tibetan, earning it its name.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dahu-glacier-3.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Formed more than 4 million years ago, it was only discovered in 1992 by satellite imagery, as it was hidden by snow. The Dagu Glacier fills an area of over 3\u00a0square miles\u00a0along the outskirts of three mountains and has been found to be up to 200m thick in\u00a0winter. In the summer, the snow recedes to reveal its icy surface. Scientists have also discovered that it is one of the world&#8217;s youngest glaciers, as well as being one of the closest to an urban city &#8211; it&#8217;s only 174 miles from the capital of Sichuan Province, Chengdu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/dahu-glacier-2.jpg\" width=\"570\" height=\"382\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The scenic area around the Dagu Glacier has been established as\u00a0a National Park since 2003, with 13\u00a0modern\u00a0glaciers in all.
