Mainland China’s first Michelin Star Guide launched this week, covering the financial capital Shanghai. Perfect timing for those\u00a0booking\u00a0holidays\u00a0in\u00a0China<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Arriving on bookshelves in France\u00a0over a century ago, the Michelin Guide is one of the most popular annual publications in the food industry to highlight the gastronomical successes of restaurants worldwide. Following the success of the Hong Kong and Macau edition in 2009 and the\u00a0subsequent release of Michelin Guides for Singapore and Seoul in Korea, the publishers chose Shanghai has their city of choice for mainland China.<\/p>\n

And it’s easy to see why. Shanghai has boomed in the last 30 years into a metropolis of international financial giants who inhabit huge skyscrapers juxtaposed against the British colonial buildings of the Bund. Big brand hotels all have their own restaurants next to hole-in-the-wall Chinese eateries that serve dish after dish of\u00a0the city’s staple foods, cooked from the heart and infused with the history and culture of the city.<\/p>\n

The Lowdown on Shanghai’s Michelin Guide<\/h2>\n

\"t'ang<\/a><\/p>\n

Twenty six\u00a0restaurants received Michelin stars in the inaugural volume. The only 3-star rated restaurant was T’ang Court in The Langham, which\u00a0showcases the finest Cantonese cuisine<\/p>\n

Michael Ellis, the Michelin Guide International Director, said of T’ang Court as quoted in the Shanghai Daily<\/a>:<\/p>\n

“In the cozy atmosphere of this restaurant where only six tables are set, the talented and creative chef Justin Tan offers cuisine in which traditional Cantonese dishes rub shoulders with some very modern dishes. Some specialities really amazed the palates of our inspectors.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Six restaurants received a 2-star rating including popular lunchtime spot Canton 8, which not only caters for local families but is now the world’s cheapest 2-star Michelin restaurant with a meal\u00a0averaging just 48 yuan (\u00a35.51 Sep 2016). The two storey restaurant can expect a surge in customers trying their delicious Shanghai delicacies, as was seen when\u00a0a hawker stall in Singapore,\u00a0Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle, was awarded a Michelin star earlier in 2016. The queues now snake around the corner.<\/p>\n
