Tran Quoc Pagoda is a Buddhist shrine that dates back to the reign of Emperor Ly Nam De (544 \u2013 548). Tran Quoc Pagoda is 15 metres tall and contains 11 levels. There is also a museum in the surrounding area that houses historical artefacts.<\/p>\n<h3>Temple of Literature<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Date: 11<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/li>\n<li>Location: Hanoi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Temple of Literature is one of Hanoi\u2019s most picturesque attractions and a fascinating historical site. Built in 1070 with its traditional Vietnamese architecture, the temple was designed to honour Confucius and is today home to Vietnam\u2019s first national university. Built at the time of Emperor Ly Thanh Tong, the temple is home to many of the country\u2019s rarest architecture and honours Vietnam\u2019s most eminent scholars.<\/p>\n<h3>Khai Dinh Tomb<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/khaidinhtomb.jpg\" alt=\"Khai Dinh Tomb in Vietnam\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/khaidinhtomb.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/khaidinhtomb-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Date: 20<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/li>\n<li>Location: Hue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While Khai Dinh Tomb was only completed in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, this fascinating Nguyen dynasty site is a visually impressive and elaborate construction. Taking over 11 years to complete, finishing in 1931, it was built for Khai Dinh, the twelfth Emperor of the Nguyen dynasty. Blending Western and Eastern architecture, this fascinating tomb acts today as a monument to the former Emperor\u2019s affluent lifestyle.<\/p>\n<h3>Perfume Pagoda<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Date: 15<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/li>\n<li>Location: Hanoi<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Situated in the Huong Son Mountains, about 60km south of Hanoi, Perfume Pagoda is an incredibly eye-catching temple, steeped in drama and thought to have been built during the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century. This complex of Buddhist temples is built into the mountain range and surrounded by dense forests. The site of a religious festival, legend claims that the area now known as Perfume Pagoda was discovered more than 2000 years ago by a meditating monk.<\/p>\n<h3>Hue Imperial Citadel<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Date: 19<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/li>\n<li>Location: Hue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Constructed in 1804, Hue Imperial Citadel was the home of the Nguyen Dynasty, who reigned for 143 years as Vietnam\u2019s last royal dynasty. Severely damaged under French rule during the Vietnam War, today Hue Imperial Citadel has 20 out of 148 original buildings left standing. The complex is incredibly striking and includes wonderful architecture such as the Emperor\u2019s residence, gates, temples, and pagodas.<\/p>\n<h2>Travel experts on Vietnam\u2019s historical sites<\/h2>\n<p>The above are just some of the incredible historical gems to be found in Vietnam, but there are so many more that must be mentioned. Fork and Foot\u2019s Andrew Strikis knows all about exploring the delights of Vietnam and, as such, spoke to us about Huyen Tran Princess Temple \u2013 a modern location but with grand historical significance:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVietnam is a country rich in history, both ancient and modern. Yet rarely do you find a site like the Huyen Tran Princess Temple that combines the best of both.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuyen Tran was the daughter of King Tran Nhan Tong, ruler of northern Vietnam in the 13th century. In a tale worthy of the big-screen, Huyen found herself married to a king &#8211; securing the lands around Hue for her father &#8211; then widowed only months later, and almost finding herself on the funeral pyre before being rescued, sailing up the Vietnamese coast to safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLegend has it that a temple was raised in Huyen Tran&#8217;s honour south of Hue, yet, as is so often the case in a war-torn country like Vietnam, it was lost to the ravages of time. Fortunately, memories of the princess&#8217;s sacrifice live on, and in 2006 the Huyen Tran Princess Temple was built.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly 7km south of Hue, the Huyen Tran Princess Temple is a sprawling collection of gardens, temples, sculptures and walking trails that showcase the very best aspects of Ngu Phong Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe short walk through the pine forests to its peak is rewarding, not only providing sweeping views of Hue but also giving you the opportunity to ring the large bronze Hoa Binh &#8216;Peace&#8217; bell at the summit under the watchful gaze of the resident monk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt VND30,000 ($1), the cost of entry is both minimal and only a fraction of what you would pay elsewhere in the region for an attraction as stunning as this. And even more unusual is how few tourists know of this incredible attraction &#8211; at times you&#8217;ll likely have the place to yourself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis attraction truly is unique and considering it&#8217;s such a short taxi ride from central Hue, there&#8217;s no reason not to allow a few hours and experience this wonderful temple for yourself. The two know Vietnam well and were able to suggest to us their absolute favourite historical site to visit:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVietnam is full of historical sites throughout the country. Some are from the more recent past, but others date back centuries. Our favourite historical site in Vietnam is the temples of M\u1ef9 S\u01a1n. Just an hour drive west from the port city of Hoi An, visiting the M\u1ef9 S\u01a1n temples is an easy day trip by motorbike. This <a href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/949\">UNESCO World Heritage site<\/a> has clusters of Hindu temple ruins that you can freely walk around, some dating back to the 4th century.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExploring the temples and seeing the detailed carvings up close made us wonder how they were able to be so precise. After an hour of strolling through the ruins we got to see a traditional dance performed in a modern shelter next to the on-site museum. Between motorbiking to the site and walking around these ancient ruins, this was one of our favourite days in Vietnam.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Suggestions by My Adventures Across the World<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5123\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/templeofliteraturehanoi.jpg\" alt=\"Temple of Literature in Vietnam\" width=\"625\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/templeofliteraturehanoi.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/templeofliteraturehanoi-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Claudia, a travel blogger from the site <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myadventuresacrosstheworld.com\/things-to-do-in-vietnam\/\">My Adventures Across the World<\/a>, looks to inspire others to get out and see Earth\u2019s many incredible destinations \u2013 including Vietnam. Speaking to us about the country\u2019s incredible historical sites, Claudia mentioned the Temple of Literature as being particularly impressive:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVietnam is packed with beautiful historical sites that are scattered around the country. I particularly enjoyed visiting the Temple of Literature in Hanoi, which is dedicated to Confucius, was built in 1070, and that later on became a university where Mandarin students would be educated. A lot of stelae are scattered around the temple, all dedicated to students who have received doctorates. What makes the Temple of Literature a must visit is the fact that it is a peaceful, silent place &#8211; a nice change from the chaos of lively Hanoi. Here it is possible to immerse oneself in the traditional way of life in Vietnam as it used to be centuries ago, and appreciate the beauty of its traditional architecture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t her only endorsement, however, as Claudia also recommends travellers visit the historically significant War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh: \u201cThis may not be a historical place per se, but definitely a must to get a better understanding of a very difficult, sad part of Vietnamese history. It isn&#8217;t a merry place to visit &#8211; prepare to be infuriated, and to cry.
