{"id":5752,"date":"2018-09-11T15:47:05","date_gmt":"2018-09-11T14:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=5752"},"modified":"2021-06-15T15:12:53","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T14:12:53","slug":"our-top-silk-road-destinations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/china\/our-top-silk-road-destinations\/","title":{"rendered":"The Top Silk Road Destinations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nicci Kimmel takes on an unforgettable journey along the ancient network of trade routes between the East and the West, <a href=\"\/china\/the-silk-road\/\">the Silk Road,\u00a0<\/a> long the territory of merchants with their camel caravans, swashbucklers and adventurers.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Named for the vast bales of silk sent from China to Persia and Europe, along with products such as spices, tea and gunpowder, the routes also transported philosophies, ideas, technologies and sciences \u2013 a trading of ideas that shaped the modern world.<\/p>\n<p>Today, it is possible to follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo and follow the Silk Road from its western terminus at Venice, to its eastern terminus at Xian, a top destination for holidays to China. Many of us, though, don\u2019t have the time to travel its whole length \u2013 luckily there are plenty of ancient Silk Road hubs left in China, Iran and Central Asia, where you can easily explore the architectural splendour and natural majesty of the landscapes over which the route passes. Whilst much of the Silk Road Kashgar is no longer there to be seen, it is very much present in spirit. The old town is still home to many craftsmen and tradesmen working with age-old techniques and there are still plenty of vibrant bazaars to discover and beautiful, old mosques to admire. Either way, it\u2019s long been a fundamental trading post for traders and merchants as a gateway to China, to Uzbekistan and to the Pamirs highway. Whilst there isn\u2019t much architecture of note from its Silk Road days, Osh is a friendly and atmospheric city, and has a huge bazaar which has been sat in the same spot for thousands of years. Surrounded by lofty sand dunes and the perfect base from which to explore the wealth of old temples, forts and towers that dot the nearby landscapes. Although modern, Dunhuang has retained its \u2018refuge\u2019 atmosphere, with a slow pace of life and wide, peaceful streets. Add in a long, rich history intertwined with the stories of Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Tamerlane, it\u2019s not really a surprise that it is the most famous of the Silk Road destinations.
