For those that\nlike to get straight out an explore there is an optional walking tour of the\ncity you can join, which will take you around the city, explaining all the\nhistory and showing you the sights such as the Royal Court Palace and the\nGovernment Place. You\u2019ll also see the Plaza de Armas, which is the central\nsquare of the city (and the heart of the old colonial centre). There\u2019s a total\nof 32 comunas (boroughs) within the city, all with their own distinct character\nand you\u2019ll get a feel for these, as you walk. For those that would like to rest\nfrom the flight, and ease into the Latin America feel, the afternoon is at your\nleisure, before meeting with the rest of the group for a welcome dinner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 3 \u2013 Explore Valparaiso <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll be collected by a coach or\nminibus to head towards the coast to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Port\ntown of Valparaiso \u2013 considered to be the most captivating and unique city in\nChile. The journey here is approximately 3 hours. When arriving at Valparaiso\nyou\u2019ll have the chance to fully explore and take in all the colours and sights\nof the city and admire the coloured houses dotted up the hillside. Upon arrival you\u2019ll enjoy a traditional lunch in the\nancestral village of Ayllu de Coyo where you\u2019ll see local people working in\ntheir local farming habitat and living in Atacamenas, which are traditionally\nconstructed with adobe, straw, cane, carob tree and Chanar. Once arriving at\nSan Pedro you\u2019ll explore some of the worlds most famous landscapes with a drive\nout to Death Valley and Moon Valley, some of the driest spots in the world! Films\nsuch as James Bond: Quantum of Solace, Spy Kids and Space Odyssey: Voyage to\nthe planets, have been filmed in and around these valleys and the Atcama\ndesert, so you may recognise some of the landscapes! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll enjoy the tranquillity of\nthe desert and watch as sunset draws in, turning the rocks from orange to red\nand then to purple. Moon Valley is at its most impressive at sunset as the\nbackdrop of hills of the Atacama Desert add to the stunning hues of the sun\nsetting over the rocks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"718\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/moon-valley.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/moon-valley.jpg 718w, https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/moon-valley-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 718px) 100vw, 718px\" \/><figcaption>Moon Valley, Chile<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 5 \u2013 Salar de Atacama <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Travel around 2 hours to reach Salar de Atacama, the largest salt flat in Chile, which was formed by evaporated water that flowed down from the Andes. Within the salt flat basin there are numerous lakes, some of which are a favourite place for flocks of flamingos. From there you\u2019ll head to Chaxa Lagoon in the Los Flamencos National Reserve whilst on route to reach Miscanti and Miniques Lagoons, which sit on the high plains at the base of two volcanoes. The views here are out of this world, and we highly recommend taking a moment to just take it all in. From here you\u2019ll travel to the village of Scoriae, where you will see ancient agricultural terraces and irrigation channels and enjoy lunch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After lunch you\u2019ll take a short\ndrive to Toconao, another peaceful village known for its Colonial architecture,\nwhich was built in Liparita (volcanic stone). After you\u2019ve spent time exploring\nthe village, you\u2019ll head back to your hotel for the evening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Salar-de-Atacama.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7028\"\/><figcaption>Salar de Atcama, Salt Flat <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 6 \u2013 El Tatio Geysers <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today is an early start, with a\n4:30am departure for a 2-hour journey into the Atacama Desert to visit the El\nTatio Geysers. Surrounded by a ring of volcanoes, you\u2019ll find 80 lively geysers\nand fumaroles, which are best seen at sunrise (hence the early start). You\u2019ll\nthen take part in a guided walk around the mud craters and bubbling geysers and\nhave time to finish wandering the area at your leisure, before departing and\ntravelling through the Andes Mountian Range with impressive views of Putama\nvolcano and the Tocorpuri Mountains.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll then arrive at the small desert village of Machuca and see the traditional way of terrace farming, mud houses with straw roofs and the wild alpacas, llamas and flamingos that roam the area. After lunch, you\u2019ll travel to an archaeological site, to see petroglyphs and other stone sculptures of shamans and alpacas. The day doesn\u2019t stop there as you\u2019ll then travel on to visit the Rainbow Valley and spot wild Vicunas as you travel back to San Pedro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"710\" height=\"401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/El-tatio-geysers.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7030\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/El-tatio-geysers.jpg 710w, https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/El-tatio-geysers-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 710px) 100vw, 710px\" \/><figcaption>El Tatio Geysers, Atacama Desert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 7 \u2013 Puerto Varas <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a\nleisurely breakfast, you\u2019ll transfer back to Calama for your flight to Puerto\nMontt, which takes approximately 5 hours. Once you land, there is a further one\nhour\u2019s journey to Puerto Varas, which is the gateway to Chile\u2019s spectacular\nLake District. Puerto Varas is located on the Llanquihue Lake and is a charming\ntown, known as the \u2018City of Roses\u2019. Stunning views from the town spread over\nthe lake to its two dominating snow-capped volcanoes called Orsono and Calbuco.\nOnce arriving and checking into your hotel, the rest of the day and evening is\nat your leisure, so you can explore or relax, depending on your personal mood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 8 \u2013 Osorno\nVolcano <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osorno\nvolcano is as a 2,652-meter volcano located in the Los Lagos Region of Chile\nand is noticeable for its similar appearance to Mount Fuji in Japan (albeit,\nMt. Fuji is 1,124m higher than Osorno!). Today you\u2019ll travel further around\nLlanquihue lake stopping in the beautiful village of Ensenada at the base of\nthis stunning volcano. From here you\u2019ll take an easy hike to 1,240 meters where\nthe Osorno Ski Mountain Centre can be found and admire the resort. As most\npeople start suffering with altitude sickness at 2,500-meters (8,000ft) this is\nthe highest you will go today, however, what\u2019s waiting for you after the climb\nback down is worth the walk! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll\ntravel through the Perez Rosales National Park, to Petrohu\u00e9 Falls where\nyou can admire the turquoise waters and lush greenery from a series of\nboardwalks over the Petrohu\u00e9 river. Your day will end with a boat trip tour\nacross the Todos Los Santos Lake, providing breath-taking views of the forest,\nmountains and the mighty Osorno Volcano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"671\" height=\"436\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Orso.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7031\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Orso.jpg 671w, https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Orso-300x195.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 671px) 100vw, 671px\" \/><figcaption>Orso Volcano, Chile <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 9 \u2013\nPuerto Natales <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a drive away from Argentinian Patagonia, Puerto Natales\nwas founded in 1911 as a port for the booming sheep industry. Nowadays it is\nmore commonly known as the gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park, with\ntourism being a key contributor to the town\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On route you will visit a local fish and artisan market this morning before heading to Puerto Montt. From there, fly to Punta Arenas and then transfer to your hotel in Puerto Natales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 10 \u2013\nPuerto Natales <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today is a\nday of two choices. Relax, unwind and take in the delights of Puerto Natales,\npreparing for a full day of touring the next day, or you can choose one of two\nof our \u2018Optional Tours\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Option one\nis a boat trip along Chile\u2019s most famous fjord, Ultima Esperanza (a.k.a Last\nHope) on route to the Mount Balmacada Glacier, and then a continued journey on\nfoot to the wonderful Serrano Glazier. Both of which are stunning and must be\nseen to be believed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Option two\nis a trip to visit a local Estancia to experience a glimpse of daily life on a\ntraditional ranch and enjoy a typical Patagonian asado lunch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 11 \u2013\nTorres Del Paine National Park <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After breakfast\nyou\u2019ll travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Designated Torres del Paine National\nPark, which lives up to its title. Packed full of waterfalls, lakes, glaciers\nand jagged peaks you\u2019ll always have something to look at. Today involves a lot\nof walking on uneven ground, so sturdy walking shoes are recommended. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spend the\nday amongst the breath-taking backdrops of the Torres del Paine Mountains. Spot\nlarge herds of Guanacos grazing freely as you walk through one of the most\nbeautiful national parks in the world. You\u2019ll visit the Salto Grande or the Peho\u00e9\nriver, and then visit Lake Peho\u00e9, Lake Grey and Lake Glacier, before sitting\ndown for lunch. On the way back to Puerto Natales (after lunch) you\u2019ll stop at\nwhere the remains of a prehistoric animal were discovered in the last\ncentury.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"657\" height=\"442\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Torres-Del-Paine-National-Park.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7033\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Torres-Del-Paine-National-Park.jpg 657w, https:\/\/www.wendywutours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Torres-Del-Paine-National-Park-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 657px) 100vw, 657px\" \/><figcaption>Torres Del Paine National Park. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 12 \u2013 Santiago<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll transfer back to the airport in Punta Arenas and fly\napproximately 3 and a half hours to Santiago. Once you have arrived, you will\nbe met and taken to your hotel for the evening, and the rest of the day is at\nyour leisure, with a farewell dinner in the evening to finish the trip in\nstyle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 13-14 \u2013 Depart Santiago <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After breakfast transfer to the airport in time for your flight back to the UK, arriving home the next day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A few things to note <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A portion of this tour is at high altitude (approx. 4,300m\nabove sea level) which has a risk of causing altitude sickness. The local\nguides will have advice and information on how to deal with this, but symptoms\ncan include dizziness, fatigue, nausea and shortness of breath. One way to help\novercome this is to properly acclimatise and keep hydrated, eat light meals and\nkeep a light schedule for the first few days. There is medication you can take\nto help ease the symptoms, and most of the hotels have free oxygen for use if\nrequired. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK passport holders do not require a visa to enter Chile,\nhowever you do require to have a minimum of 12 months validity on your passport\nfrom your return date. You\u2019ll\nbe taken back by the Moai here due to their sheer size and weight, not to\nmention the mystery surrounding their creation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This afternoon is dedicated to the world-famous Moai statues\nas you travel to a volcanic crater called Rano Raraku where the stone for the\nMoai was quarried and figures were carved. You\u2019ll hike to the crater for\nbreath-taking views and of course more Moai.
