Take an overnight flight to Beijing, the capital city of China. On arrival you will be met by your guide and transferred by private vehicle to your hotel.
Visit the iconic Great Wall at Mutianyu. This section is specifically chosen as it is well restored and has the choice of an energetic walk or a cable car to get to the top. While you are here you’ll learn about the construction of this huge barrier that stretches for thousands of miles and was built to defend the Chinese from the attacking Mongols.
Visit a Jade museum where you can learn about the importance of this gemstone in Chinese culture and purchase a piece if you wish. You’ll have lunch here.
In the afternoon take a stroll around the grounds of the Summer Palace to see the Long Corridor and Marble Boat. More active visitors can hike the trails through the woods on Longevity Hill. There’s also the option to take a boat across Kunming Lake for a view from the water (weather permitting).
In the evening is the option to visit a Peking Duck restaurant to taste this famous local delicacy. (B,L)
No visit to Beijing would be complete without seeing the Forbidden City, the centre of power of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Here you will see the best collection of traditional Chinese architecture anywhere in the world and learn about how the emperors lived from 500 years ago up until the Last Emperor in 1912.
You’ll then explore one the hutong districts by cyclo-rickshaw. As you are pedalled around this historic part of the city along narrow alleys, you’ll see a more traditional way of life. A local family will invite you to their home and you’ll join them for a simple lunch.
In the evening is the option to see a fascinating Chinese acrobatic show. (B,L)
Today is free for you to relax and enjoy the facilities of the hotel, explore Beijing for yourself or take an optional tour which can be arranged locally. Options include visiting the Temple of Heaven where you can join the locals practicing tai chi, taking a Chinese painting class or making and flying your own kite. (B)
Transfer to the airport and fly to Xian, one of China’s ancient imperial capitals. Here you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. (B)
Possibly the most important archaeological discovery of the 20th century, the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang protects the tomb of China’s first emperor. Each of the warriors is individually sculpted and bears different features. See if you can spot a foot soldier, an officer and an archer. There are terracotta horses too! While you are here you’ll learn about how the country of China was formed by unifying a number of separate states. You’ll also visit a workshop where reproduction warriors are made.
In the evening there’s the option to watch a music and dance performance based on styles from the Tang Dynasty. This is combined with a sumptuous dinner of the local Shui Jiao dumplings where each morsel is shaped to represent its filling. Look out for pigs, fish and fruit! (B,L)
Today you can enjoy as you wish. You could explore Xian on your own or take an optional tour arranged locally. You could visit the city wall and cycle around its ramparts as well as stroll through the Muslim Quarter and discover Xian’s history at the eastern end of the fabled Silk Road. You could also join a dumpling-making class. (B)
Transfer to the airport and fly to Chengdu, the provincial capital of Sichuan. Here you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to your hotel. (B)
Travel outside of the city to the panda reserve at Dujiangyan. This centre is a vital part of the breeding and conservation effort in Sichuan Province and you’ll learn about the important work carried out here. A fascinating optional experience is to enter the panda enclosure with a keeper and help with the daily care routine which includes preparing food and cleaning the enclosure. (This option is open to participants aged 12-65 and requires a valid health certificate.)
In the evening is the option of enjoy a Sichuan dinner and watch a fascinating ‘changing faces’ show where the performers magically change their masks with lightning speed. (B,L)
Today you can enjoy as you wish. You could explore Chengdu on your own or take an optional tour arranged locally. A favourite day tour is to visit the Grand Buddha in Leshan where you can view this huge rock carving from the river and take a walk past its feet, marveling at its immense size. Alternatively visit Pingle ancient town and the nearby bamboo sea which is spanned by a long rope bridge. (B)
Transfer to the airport and fly to Guilin, the gateway to some of China’s most beautiful scenery. Here you’ll be met by your guide and transferred to the Club Med Gulin hotel, where you can enjoy all inclusive food, drink and entertainment. There is also an excellent kids club. (B,D)
Take a cruise on the Li River which wends its way through a lush landscape punctuated with rounded limestone hills. The beauty of this area has been an inspiration to many local artists who feature the hills on ink-scroll paintings. Arrive in the picturesque town of Yangshuo and explore the markets or relax in a café before taking the scenic drive back to your hotel.
As an option, stay later in Yangshuo and watch the popular Impression Sanjie Liu light and sound show. This production features hundreds of local people while using the river as a stage and the mountainous landscape as a spectacular backdrop. (B,L,D)
There are plenty of activities available at the hotel or in the surrounding area. Take a cycle ride in the beautiful countryside, see the fascinating formations of Reed Flute Cave or take a gentle raft ride along the pretty Yulong River. (B,L,D)
