Wendy Wu Tours escorted our first group of UK travellers to China over 25 years ago, and we have been leaving our customers in complete awe of this very special country ever since.

Over the last few years of global uncertainty, China has received a fair amount of media attention. We understand that this might raise a few concerns amongst some would-be China adventurers.

We’re happy to reassure you that this incredible country is as welcoming, exciting, and safe as ever. And you couldn’t be in better hands with our team of experts and in-country National Escorts.

Here we address some of your most frequently asked questions about travelling to China with Wendy Wu Tours.

Is China safe to visit?

beijing

China has always been and remains safe for tourists, with violent crime rates lower than in many Western countries. Common sense should be exercised in busy public places as small risks like petty theft and pickpocketing are present – just like in most other busy towns and cities worldwide.

When you travel to China with Wendy Wu Tours, you will always have our National Escorts on hand. These local experts will brief you if a particular situation requires extra caution.

What is it actually like travelling to China in 2024?

China re-opened its borders in April 2023 and has welcomed visitors back with open arms ever since! Travelling in China is as safe, fun and fascinating as it has ever been. Expect friendly faces, welcoming locals and general excitement that you are spending your time exploring this wonderful country.

What’s the best time of year to visit China?

China is a year-round destination! With four distinct seasons, the ideal travel periods are spring (Mar to May) and autumn (Sep to Nov). Many people choose to travel at other times of the year when there are fewer tourists, but please keep in mind that the summer months may be very hot and the winter months may be very cold. Our tours cover the length and breadth of China and depending on the time of year and where you travel, you may experience two or more seasons as you journey through the country. Do I need to worry about the language barrier?

English isn’t widely spoken in most of China – English speakers are usually those who work in travel and tourism or for an international business. However, things are changing and much of the younger generation has an interest in studying and speaking English – you may come across some students who are keen to practice with you! The language barrier isn’t something you need to worry about on a Wendy Wu tour. You will be accompanied by your National Escort throughout your tour – all of our National Escorts in China speak excellent English and will be able to translate and help with any communications requests.

Do I need a visa to visit China? What is the process for getting one?

British Nationals need a visa to enter mainland China, and previously, all applicants between 14 and 70 years old needed to make their application in person at a Visa Application Centre (London, Manchester and Edinburgh). However, China has temporarily suspended the requirement to visit the embassy – which means that Wendy Wu Tours can take care of the whole process without you leaving home (information correct as of 19th July 2024 – the Chinese government may decide to reinstate embassy visits at any time).

Nationals of some countries no longer need a visa to enter China including Ireland, Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Australia and New Zealand. Check this link for the full list of visa-exempt nationalities.

Our experts at Wendy Wu Tours will help guide you through the process, and the cost of your visa application is included in your tour price. Our team will contact you around 6-8 weeks before your departure to start your visa application.
