Known as the Flaming Cliffs, due to the clay soil glowing red at sunset, Bayanzag means "rich in saxaul shrubs", a thorny shrub measuring approximately two meters high, found in the desert surrounded by sand, rock, and open plains of the Gobi Desert.

It is at these sand cliffs where many dinosaur fossils and eggs were found in 1922, by palaeontologist Roy Chapman Andrews. His first findings being a horned, herbivorous, two-meter-long unidentified dinosaur, which was later named the protoceratops Andrews, after his discovery. You can now see the fossils of these fascinating creatures in the museum in Ulaanbaatar.

Although easily spotted through an amateur's eyes, it is illegal to remove any fossils without the appropriate permits.
