A country where 90% of the landscapes are over 1,500 metres, Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic, is well-known for its unspoilt and mountainous natural beauty. This is the place for authentic and genuine encounters, be they with the wonderfully warm and hospitable locals, with the rich culture or with the age-old way of life.
While vibrant capital city Bishkek is modern (with plenty of Soviet trappings), Kyrgyzstan’s identity is very much rooted in its nomadic past. This can be easily experienced in spectacularly set camps where you can stay in a warm and cosy yurt, and the sheep-herd-dotted jailoos (summer pastures) of the steppe.
Bordered by Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan also offers access to the fabled Silk Road. While its neighbours boast grand monuments of this illustrious past, Kyrgyzstan gives a ‘realer’ perspective – the remote, rugged landscapes crossed by the traders and their caravans.
Deeply connected to hospitality, family values and a strong relationship with nature, Kyrgyzstan offers travellers a rich and authentic cultural experience shaped by centuries of nomadic traditions and life in the mountains of Central Asia.
One of the easiest ways to experience it is by staying in a yurt, a traditional felt tent used by nomadic communities for generations, and one of the most recognisable symbols of Kyrgyz culture. Set in mountain pastures or on the shores of alpine lakes, yurt stays are the perfect way to gain insight into the nomadic customs that remain an important part of daily life, particularly during the summer months when families move livestock to highland grazing areas.
Hospitality is a central pillar of Kyrgyz society; visitors are often warmly welcomed with tea, bread, and homemade dishes. Sharing food is considered a sign of respect and friendship, and a wonderful way to engage with local people and get a glimpse of their day to day lives. Traditional dishes include beshbarmak, plov, and freshly baked bread, often served during communal gatherings.
Horse culture also plays a major role in Kyrgyz identity. Horse riding, traditional games such as kok-boru, and eagle hunting remain popular past times while music and storytelling are also important cultural tools.

I’m convinced that sharing knowledge about this part of the world with our guests is my mission, it's certainly my passion. When a journey comes to an end and our guests look happy and their eyes are shining, I feel that all efforts were worth it. So, my friends welcome to Central Asia!
Brilliant! Another winner, we have now completed our 5th tour with Wendy Wu and hope to do more in the futureMs Pauline
I have been a National Escort for almost 17 years, and it was the best decision I made. I enjoy everything there is to guiding, from the history to the experiences, especially meeting new people often.
Good mix of hotels and guest houses, good quality food and a nice size group (14 in all). The National Escorts were especially helpful.Ms Maureen
Awards are all well and good, but it's our customer feedback that means the most to us. We're proud that so many of our customers would be happy to recommend us to their friends and family - that's all the accolade we need.
