About a kilometre upstream from the Taj Mahal, the colossal red sandstone Agra Fort is one of India’s best and most impressive, set on the banks of the Yamura River. Built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565 as a military base and royal residence, the fort became the seat of Mughal power whilst Agra was the empire’s capital. Within the 21-metre-high double walls is the imperial city of the emperors, packed with magnificent palaces, audience halls and mosques, all set amongst lush, landscaped gardens.
