Capture the magic of Antarctica, Falkland Islands and South Georgia as you embark on a once in a lifetime event to witness the total eclipse of the sun.
Embark the 189-passenger vessel Ocean Diamond, one of the fastest ships in Antarctica in Ushuaia, the 'city at the edge of the world'. From here, you'll navigate the Beagle Channel and Drake Passage to reach the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, where you'll enjoy ice field hikes, wild penguin encounters and whale-spotting opportunities along the coast of the White Continent. In the Scotia Sea, en route from Antarctica and the South Georgia archipelago, you'll experience a unique event: a total solar eclipse in Antarctica, plunging the polar region into darkness.
After the eclipse, continue to South Georgia, a crescent-shaped island home to thousands upon thousands of king penguins. Spend three days getting to know the untamed wildlife and the landscapes they call home, before continuing on your cruise to the Falkland Islands, famous for their rugged landscapes and turbulent history.
Arrive in Ushuaia and transfer to your hotel, before meeting your fellow adventurers at a welcome dinner.
Morning at leisure before embarking the Ocean Diamond, one of the fastest ships in Antarctica. She carries a maximum of 189 passengers and 144 crew, has two stablisers and an ice-strengthened hull. Enjoy a Captain's welcome and set sail down the Beagle Channel.
Cross the legendary Drake Passage, with plenty of activities, lectures and workshops on Antarctic history and wildlife on offer to keep you entertained.
Each day explore local bays, channels and landing sites by Zodiac. Your Expedition Team will take care of you at each landing, whether you hike the glacial landscapes, visit research stations, or enjoy photography opportunities with curious Chinstrap, Adélie and Gentoo penguins, all of which breed here in their thousands.
Bid farewell to the Antarctic Peninsula, as your next destination is the Scotia Sea, between the South Orkney Islands and South Georgia. Here, you'll witness an incredible and rare natural phenomenon: a total solar eclipse, visible only at these very low latitudes. On days 8-9, enjoy expert meteorology workshops to get prepared for this once in a lifetime event.
Early this morning, you will be summoned on deck for the eclipse itself; an extraordinary, much-awaited moment. For a brief period (1 minute, 40 seconds), the moon will block out the sun's light, plunging the polar regions into darkness. You will be provided with a pair of eclipse glasses in advance of the momentous event.
South Georgia, a beautiful, crescent-shaped island almost entirely uninhabited by humans, is one of the most fertile breeding grounds in the world for sub-Antarctic wildlife, with beaches blanketed in penguins and seals - thousands upon thousands of King Penguins call this island home. Visit the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton, one of the most famous Antarctic explorers.
Bid farewell to the King Penguins and set sail for the Falkland Islands. Spend the days at sea with further talks and lectures to help prepare for Falkand wildlife sightings and the rugged landscapes of the region.
The archipelago contains two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland. Spend two days exploring them with Zodiac excursions and landings.
After two weeks, of wildlife encounters, sail back to Ushuaia. Disembark after breakfast on Day 20 and continue with your onward arrangements - all of which can be organised by Wendy Wu Tours.
