This picturesque freshwater lake, one of 17 ancient lakes worldwide believed to be over two million years old, Lake Khovsgol is also the largest lake by volume in Mongolia.
In the very north of the country, close to the Russian border, Khovsgol is set in the foothills of the towering Sayan Mountains. It is surrounded by sweeping valleys and a magnificent national park which is home to fish, birds and mammals such as brown bear, Siberian moose, elk and, of course, yaks.
Often described as the dark blue pearl, this huge expanse of water is frozen for almost half of the year and has over 100 rivers and streams that flow into its calm waters. Lake Khovsgol is often referred to as “the younger sister” to Lake Baikal, which is only 200 kilometres away, in Russia.
