Depart Lima and travel south along the Pan-American Highway towards Paracas, watching the urban scenery gradually give way to Peru's vast coastal desert. Arrive in this small seaside town on the shores of Paracas Bay and enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure.
Set out by boat across Paracas Bay, pausing to view the mysterious Candelabra, an enormous geoglyph etched into the desert hillside. Continue to the Ballestas Islands, a rocky archipelago home to seabirds, Humboldt penguins and sea lions. Back on dry land, explore Paracas National Reserve, where ochre desert meets the Pacific. Follow the Turritella Paleontological Trail to see 45-million-year-old marine fossils, then visit La Catedral, a cathedral-shaped rock formation partially collapsed by the 2007 earthquake. Take in the striking coastline from the Isthmus viewpoint, Red Beach and Yumaque Beach.
After breakfast, leave Paracas for the return drive to Lima. Travel once again through the arid coastal desert, passing small communities and stretches of Pacific coastline.
