This holiday is in 2 parts, a tour of eastern parts of India and a river cruise. The river cruise organised by an independent company was superb but the organisation of the first part was a lot to be desired. There were a number of flights whose timings were poor. The itinerary stated “scenic mountainous drive in Sikkim” but the early afternoon flight meant a lot of the journey was in the dark. The flight from Bagdogra to Guwahati involved a 5 hour stop over in a tiny airport with little facilities. This meant a 14 hour day from one hotel to the next. The itinerary stated “the rest of the day at leisure” but we arrived in the hotel at 8 pm. The hotel in Gangtok was poorly run. Rooms weren’t cleaned and I received a dirty bath mat and the choice of food was limited. I suggest book the cruise yourself and get another company to organise the first part.

An excellent way to visit some of the less travelled and more remote corners of India. The cruise element of the tour is exceptional offering comfort, expert guidance and a touch of glamour while cruising through the spectacular Assamese countryside. The Himalayan element was more challenging with some long drives along mountain roads but again with expert guides and drivers. Travelling in India always brings it’s challenges and this was no exception, largely due to unseasonal weather but that’s what makes for memorable experiences.
