The South Georgia and Antarctica: Penguin Safari is an unforgettable two-week Antarctic cruise itinerary, designed for true adventurers, photographers and wildlife lovers. Embark on a glorious glacier hike, spot incomparable marine wildlife, and pay respects at the grave of famed explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton on the distant shores of rarely-visited South Georgia Island.

This remote region's wildlife is some of the most wild and beautiful on earth or sea. Discover the Antarctic Peninsula on foot and by Zodiac, look out for soaring albatross and swooping petrels, encounter king, Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins, and listen out for the distinctive roar of the local elephant seal colonies. Your explorations of the vast and beautiful White Continent will echo in your memory long after your voyage.

  • Day 1
    ARRIVE IN USHUAIA
    DAY 1: ARRIVE IN USHUAIA

    Your journey begins in the bustling port of Ushuaia* in south Patagonia. One of the southernmost cities in South America, it has been nicknamed 'the city at the end of the world'. Meet your fellow voyagers at the hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner; any time beforehand is at leisure to explore Ushuaia. <br>*Note: On the 8th Dec 2021 voyage, the first night will be in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a charter flight to Ushuaia included on Day 2.

  • Day 2
    EMBARKATION & THE BEAGLE CHANNEL
    DAY 2: EMBARKATION & THE BEAGLE CHANNEL

    Embark the ship this afternoon. Savour the tremendous atmosphere of anticipation with your fellow voyagers as the ship sails down the historic Beagle Channel, named for the nineteenth century vessel of the same name.

  • Days 3-6
    LEARNING AT SEA
    DAY 3-6: LEARNING AT SEA

    Spend three days sailing due east toward South Georgia, accompanied by the onboard experts in the Expedition Team. Enjoy topical lectures, inspirational bar talks and Antarctic anecdotes from the team. Learn to identify the seabirds that commonly follow the ship, prepare for Zodiac excursions and shore landings, and hear all about the diverse and beautiful wildlife you'll be looking for in South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula.

    EXPLORE SOUTH GEORGIA
    DAY 7: EXPLORE SOUTH GEORGIA

    South Georgia is a mountainous, fjord-filled island in the shape of a crescent moon, home to few humans bar scientists and researchers, but a haven for biodiverse wildlife, and affectionately referred to as the 'Galapagos of the Poles'. Explore ashore, and be sure to bring your camera - a colossal king penguin colony lives here, along with thousands of fur and elephant seals.

  • Day 8
    FURTHER ADVENTURES IN SOUTH GEORGIA
    DAY 8: FURTHER ADVENTURES IN SOUTH GEORGIA

    Spend another day exploring South Georgia, a favourite among polar history enthusiasts. This is the last resting place of famed British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton. Pay your respects at the grave before heading back to the ship, bidding farewell to the seal and penguin colonies en route.

  • Days 9-10
    CRUISE TO THE ANTARCTIC
    DAYS 9-10: CRUISE TO THE ANTARCTIC

    Depart South Georgia and spend two days cruising southwest to the Antarctic Peninsula, in the safe hands of the captain and his expert team. The Expedition Team provide onboard enrichment, with further lectures and activities, and will notify you of wildlife sighting opportunities such as seabirds or whales as you sail toward the White Continent.

    EXPLORE THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA
    DAY 11: EXPLORE THE ANTARCTIC PENINSULA

    There are no words or photos that can prepare first-time visitors for the awe-inspiring beauty and serene vastness of the White Continent - it must truly be seen to be believed. Glistening glaciers and iridescent ice fields stretch out towards the mountain-studded skyline and the silhouetted peaks of the Eternity Range. Today is the first of three glorious days spent exploring the peninsula on foot and by Zodiac.

    DEEPER INTO ANTARCTICA
    DAY 12-13: DEEPER INTO ANTARCTICA

    Spend a further two days becoming familiar with the astounding Antarctic Peninsula and its incredibly biodiversity. Before you leave, you'll be able to instantly identify Chinstrap, Adélie and gentoo penguins on sight. Your adventures will be determined by the weather; you might be hiking an icy glacier, Zodiac cruising in search of minke whales, or visiting a historic research station in Marguerite Bay. Whatever excursions you join, your polar adventures are memories that will remain for a lifetime.

    CROSSING THE DRAKE PASSAGE
    DAYS 14-15: CROSSING THE DRAKE PASSAGE

    Toast farewell to the Antarctic Peninsula, cross the Bransfield Strait, and sail north across the legendary Drake Passage, the body of water that lies between the South Shetland Islands and the tip of South America. Humpback whales, giant petrels and swooping albatrosses are a common sight here; lucky travellers may chance to see hourglass dolphins frolicking in the ship's wake.

  • Day 16
    DISEMBARKATION IN USHUAIA
    DAY 16: DISEMBARKATION IN USHUAIA

    Arrive back in Ushuaia, jubilant in the knowledge that you can now count yourself among the world's lucky few to have been to the Antarctic. Disembark the ship and continue with your onward arrangements. Wendy Wu Tours can arrange your hotels and flights, or alternatively, further far-flung adventures. From here, you may want to extend your exploration with trips to New World vineyards, head north to Machu Picchu and Peru, or journey west to the iconic Easter Island.
