Home to huge landscapes, dramatic coastlines and a rich indigenous heritage, on a holiday to Canada, prepare to be awestruck!
Canada is a country on an epic scale. Unrivalled in its variety of landscapes, from fjord studded coastline, vast prairies and enormous waterfalls to glacier capped mountains, boreal forests and icy blue lakes, this is a place where the adventure is plentiful, and the ‘wow’ moments just keep on coming. Set within these glorious landscapes are vibrant town and cities – Vancouver and Banff with their laidback feel and spectacular settings, hip, cosmopolitan Toronto, and Quebec City, the enchanting bastion of old France – a people who cover a whole spectrum of cultures and a wealth of First Nations (indigenous) heritage. This mix gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy a diverse range of cultural, artistic and culinary experiences that show that Canada has so much more to give than maple syrup, ice hockey and Mounties. While Canada’s size can be intimidating, you’ll find, as you begin to explore, that the welcoming Canucks and the friendly, small-town vibe soon make you feel right at home and raring to discover more.
Canada’s Pacific coast is a place of forest and mountains. Nestled among this beauty is the vibrant city of Vancouver and mountain resort of Whistler, both of which are a delight to explore. Just across the Strait of Georgia is Vancouver Island with its wild Pacific beaches, orchards and ancient rainforest; you’ll also find British Columbia’s provincial capital, Victoria, a lovely city full of grand colonial architecture and opportunities to spot whales in the rich waters. Vancouver is usual the terminus for a road or rail trip through the incredible scenery of the Rockies. This adventure includes world-famous names like Banff National Park, Lake Louise, Jasper National Park and the Icefields Parkway, and puts you right in the heart of some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery.
In the east, you’ll find Canada’s largest and most populous provinces, Ontario and Quebec. Ontario is home to some of Canada’s best-known names – Toronto, Niagara Falls and Ottawa - but has so much more. Here, you can also pass Great Lakes and vast tracts of wild forest, sip wine in the Niagara wine region, island hop on the St Lawrence River, and so much more. Quebec, Canada’s francophone province, might share its country’s vast wilderness, but its vibe is entirely its own. Quebec City and Montreal have a cultural identity more akin with Europe, and a gastronomy that brings together old French practices with local ingredients (don’t forget to try the poutine!). Not forgetting that the province produces 70% of the world’s maple syrup!
Then, there is Canada’s Atlantic coast, also known as the Maritimes, isn’t as dramatic as the west, but boasts beautiful seaside scenery and a quaint and friendly vibe. This is where you’ll find the land of ‘Anne of Green Gables’, the huge tides of the Bay of Fundy and rich culture rooted in Acadian, Scottish and English heritage.
Across the nation you can, and should, experience First Nation’s culture. There are at least 634 recognised communities and more than 50 distinct nations and unique languages, each with their own identity, laws and spirituality that is deeply linked to the lands that their ancestors lived on the centuries Whether its reading totem poles with an indigenous guide, gathering round the fire for songs and storytelling or dining on food that blend traditional First Nation ingredients with modern style, connecting with these communities gives a whole different perspective on life in this monumental land.
