A city on the west bank of the Pearl River estuary and the apex of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, with views of Hong Kong’s famous skyline across the sea, Zhuhai is a city packed with entertainments. Nicknamed the ‘Chinese Riveria’, Zhuhai is one of China’s most popular local tourist destinations and has a fascinating history around motor racing.

Things to see in Zhuhai
A relaxed yet vibrant coastal city, Zhuhai is fronted by an island-dotted bay and surrounded by tranquil countryside. Boasting plenty of resorts and theme parks, it also has lots of cultural landmarks – stroll the seafront promenade to visit the Zhuhai Fishing Girl by famous Chinese artist Pan He, admire the Zaha Hadid Architects-designed Zhuhai Jinwan Civic Art Centre on its artificial lake, and the Grand Theatre on Yeli Island that looks like two upright seashells. The Fu Hua Li lifestyle and entertainment complex is designed to look and feel like Europe, with plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes to fill an afternoon.

Zhuhai is perhaps best known for the hipster enclave of Beishan Art District, a cultural hotspot housed in Tongzhi period (19th century) buildings. It is a bustling place for a creative crowd, so head here to browse quirky boutiques and peer into artist’s studios and workshops. For a little more history, Doumen Old Street is lined with lovely old architecture, each building a traditional retailer and adorned with engraved flowers and motifs. While most of the old medicine shops and fabric stores are gone, there are still a few that are open for a nose around.

Zhuhai’s Delicious Cuisine
Naturally for a coastal city, Zhuhai’s cuisine revolves around the freshest catch of the day, but if you’re still feeling peckish after dinner, try Xiawan Night Market for some late-night snacking.  Here, you can sample delicacies from across China and enjoy a bit of the city’s street culture.
