Sat on a beautiful bay on the Caribbean coast, Cartagena is the jewel in Colombia’s crown. Founded in 1533 as a port, today it is one of the most complete examples of a Spanish colonial walled city in the world. Perfectly preserved, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site at that, the high walls guard narrow cobbled streets, brightly coloured houses and balconies overflowing with bougainvillea. It is utterly enchanting to explore. The other side of the bay is occupied by a vibrant modern city, complete with shimmering skyscrapers, whilst offshore are a cluster of tropical islands, just waiting to be relaxed on. Cartagena is also a hub of culture and a great place to enjoy Colombia’s delicious food and drink in its plentiful bars and restaurants.
