A project that took nearly as long to complete as the Grand Pyramid itself, Cairo's Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) fully opened to the public in November 2025. A colossal 500,000 square metres, it houses 100,000 artefacts (20,000 of which have never been displayed before), the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation, Ancient Egypt.
Greeted on entry by a towering 3,200-year-old statue of Ramses II, GEM’s collection spans seven millennia, from the Predynastic Period to Roman Egypt, and spread across 12 exhibition halls, organised by theme and period. It is within these halls that you will find the complete collection of Tutankhamun artefacts, displayed together for the first time since the boy king’s discovery by Howard Carter in 1922, including his famous golden mask, a throne and chariots. Another fascinating exhibit is the Khufu boats, 4,500-year-old wooden vessel found at the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu, some of the oldest of their kind every discovered.
GEM’s façade is an ode to the Great Pyramids of Giza, which sit just 2 kilometres away. Head up to the upper floor to see them perfectly framed in a huge picture window.
