Tracing its history back to the time of the ancient Pharaohs, Egypt is the home to the epic pyramids, intricate hieroglyphics, mysterious mummies and the majestic River Nile. But look closer, and you will find a history laced with ingenious inventions; the 365-day calendar and paper and pen from the reeds that grew beside the river to name a few.

The saying ‘Egypt is the gift of the Nile’ still rings true today, with the mighty river a great way to discover the beauty of the landscapes from the waters that run through the length of the country. Take a leisurely cruise and admire the awe-inspiring monuments studding the banks of the river where one of the oldest civilisations in the world first began.

Egypt's most famous attactions are of course the monumental ruins and incredible tombs of the ancient pharoahs and whether you are gazing awe-struck at the huge pyramids, wandering around the vast temple complex of Karnak or marvelling at the vibrant tomb paintings of the Valley of the Kings you will not be disapointed.

In Cairo you have one of the great islamic cities of the world; a fascinating whirl of grand mosques, churches and bazaars, whilst to the north lies Alexandria with its intriguing reminders of its glorious Roman past and the second world war battlefield sites of El-Alemain.

Frequently Asked Questions about Egypt

  • When is the best time to visit Egypt?
October to April is generally the most comfortable period for sightseeing, with warm days and cooler mornings and evenings. The summer months can be extremely hot, especially in Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel. Whatever the season, bring sun protection and be prepared for early starts that avoid the strongest heat and busiest periods.

  • Do I need a visa for Egypt?
British passport holders normally need a visa for Egypt. Dreams of Egypt currently includes visa fees for UK passport holders. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival and have a blank page, so follow the latest Wendy Wu and FCDO instructions before departure.

  • Is it safe to travel to Egypt?
Wendy Wu Tours monitors official FCDO advice and works closely with experienced local partners, and itineraries operate only where we are satisfied that travel can proceed. Advice can change and the FCDO advises against travel to some parts of Egypt, so check the latest guidance and ensure your insurance covers the full itinerary. While on tour, follow the instructions of your National Escort and local guides.

  • How active are the Egypt tours?

  • What can I expect from the Nile cruise?
Dreams of Egypt includes a four-night, five-star cruise from Luxor to Aswan aboard a vessel such as MS Tamr. The ship has a sundeck, pool, bar and restaurant, while deluxe cabins include a private bathroom and Nile views. Meals and daily excursions are included as shown in the itinerary.

  • What should I wear in Egypt?
Lightweight, breathable clothing is best for the heat, together with a hat, sunglasses and comfortable walking shoes. Modest dress is respectful, particularly at mosques, where shoulders and knees should be covered; women may also be asked to cover their hair. Bring a light layer for cool mornings, evenings and air-conditioned spaces.

  • How does tipping work in Egypt?
Tipping is paid locally on Wendy Wu group tours. Your National Escort will collect the total atthe beginning of the tour and distribute for service along the way. The current Dreams of Egypt price information lists a tipping amount of US$160 per person, but this can change, so use the amount and instructions in your final documents. Small-denomination cash is also useful for drinks and public toilets.

  • What food can I expect in Egypt?
Dreams of Egypt includes all meals. Expect Egyptian dishes such as grilled meat, rice, bread, vegetables, beans and mezze, alongside international choices in hotels and on the Nile cruise. Tell us about dietary requirements when booking, and drink sealed bottled water rather than tap water.

  • Can I take photos in Egypt's tombs and museums?
Photography rules vary between sites and can change without notice. Some locations allow photography without flash, while others restrict cameras, charge a fee or prohibit photography completely. Your guide will explain the rules at each visit; never photograph military, police or security facilities, and do not bring a drone without the required permission.
