Another of southern India’s hill stations and a summer resort of the British government, Munnar sits at 1,600 metres altitude on the confluence of three mountain streams in the midst of the spectacular landscapes of the Western Ghats in Kerala.
The town itself has developed over the years but still boasts an abundance of English country cottages and some old world charms, but it is its setting that you come here for. Munnar flourished as a tea growing region in the 1880s and remains south India’s largest tea growing region so, as you would expect, much of the countryside around the town is taken up by tea plantations.
Adding to the myriad shades of green are virgin forests, savannah, rolling hills and scenic valleys, with the odd waterfall thrown in amongst it. In the early mornings and evenings, mists roll across the close by mountain tops and often you’ll find yourself above the clouds that have settled into the valleys in spectacular fashion. As well as its natural beauty, Munnar is also home to the Tata Tea Museum, which tells the fascinating story of tea production in the area.
