Our The Glories of Japan in Cherry Blossom Season with Joe Swift itinerary takes you to Japan in the midst of the sensational cherry blossom season, as well as introducing you to the country's most iconic sights and cultural treasures. You'll travel with the assurance that, as well as being fully escorted, all of your tour arrangements are taken care of, with international flights, accommodation and all touring listed below.
Fly overnight to Tokyo. Choose from a range of excellent airlines, including Air France, Air China, British Airways (supplements may apply) or Cathay Pacific (supplements may apply). Transfer to your hotel. (D)
Today, you will experience both the modern and traditional sides of Tokyo, ascending the soaring Tokyo Sky Tree, exploring the Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa district in your own time, and wandering amongst the cherry blossoms in Ueno Park. In the evening, cruise the waters of Tokyo Bay, with dinner and welcome drink, and admire the lights of the city. (B,D)
Travelling by bullet train, take a day trip to Hakone and Mount Fuji. Cruise spectacular Lake Ashi. Travel into the Fuji Five Lakes area, visit Oishi Park on the shores of Lake Kawaguchi for spectacular views of the mountain, and learn more at the Fuji Visitor Centre before catching the bullet train back to Tokyo. (B)
Travel to Yudanaka by coach, stopping en route at Matsumoto to visit the magnificent castle. Built in the 16th century, it has all its original interiors. Yudanaka, at the top of a valley full of orchards and farms, is also well-known as an onsen resort, and your accommodation tonight will be in a traditional ryokan. You could also try the Japanese onsen (shared baths) where men and women bathe separately in natural hot springs (note that it is customary to go nude). (B,L,D)
Travel up into the hills around Yudanaka to meet the beautiful Japanese Macaques, better known as snow monkeys, who have taken to bathing in their very own hot springs in the forest. A short walk through ‘Hell Valley’ (named for its steam vents and sulphurous streams) will bring you to the pool, which is frequented by a large population of monkeys. Returning to Nagano, catch a bullet train to the cultural and historic hub of Kanazawa. The rest of the day is free to spend as you wish. (B)
Kanazawa boasts some of the country’s best-preserved traditional neighbourhoods, once home to Geisha and Samurai. This scenic settlement is also an exciting, modern city with a thriving modern art, fashion and dining scene. Explore the Nomura Samurai House, once home to one of the most powerful families in the city. Continue to Kenroku-en, a 17th-century garden and one of the ‘Three Great Gardens of Japan’, where you will be joined by Joe Swift. The rest of the day is at leisure. (B,L)
Board another of Japan’s bullet trains and travel to Kyoto. On arrival, you’ll have the rest of the day free. Why not make your way down to the famous district of Gion, where Geisha can be seen shuffling along the cobbled streets in their kimonos and geta (tall wooden clogs). (B)
A treasure trove of Japan’s history and culture, Kyoto is where Japan’s best known cultural arts were born – the tea ceremony, Kabuki and Geisha to name a few. Today you will tour the city’s markets and temple of Kiyomizu, the haunting Shinto shrine of Fushimi Inari, and the golden pavilion of Kinkaku-ji. The rest of the day is free. (B)
Another former capital, Nara is a picturesque, compact city. Admire the magnificent Daibutsu, the world’s largest bronze statue of Buddha at Todaiji temple, with grounds full of Sika Deer, regarded as messengers of the Shinto gods. Later stroll through Isuien Gardens. Transfer by coach to Osaka where the rest of the day is free. (B)
Visit magnificent Osaka Castle before discovering the foodie haven that is the Dotonbori District, where you’ll sample delicious local flavours at lunch before taking a cruise on the Yodogawa River. This evening, sit down to enjoy a farewell meal. (B,L,D)
Transfer to Osaka’s airport and fly to the UK, arriving home the same or following
