A bustling resort town in the heart of both the Canadian Rockies and Banff National Park, unsurprisingly Banff has a rather spectacular setting. Based around a central street, Banff Avenue, the town is home to some historic architecture, the Cave and Basin National Historic Site, interesting museums and galleries, and the Banff Gondola, which will whisk you up to the summit of Sulphur Mountain for spectacular views.
Banff’s biggest boon is, of course, being the gateway to the national park of the same name. Banff is the world’s third oldest national park, founded in 1885, and contains some of Canada’s most emblematic landscapes, including the turquoise waters of Lake Louise and Moraine Lake and the towering peaks of Mounts Victoria, Castle and Rundle. In between are rivers, glaciers, canyons, waterfalls, huge swathes of woodland, all criss-crossed by walking trails and home to beavers, bears and eagles. Whether you visit the park to be active or to simple soak up the stupendous natural beauty, prepare to have your mind blown.
