Visiting the Galápagos is undoubtedly an unforgettable experience, but travelling at the perfect time makes it even better! Read on to find out what is happening, when.
The Galápagos sits right on the Equator, making it a year-round destination with 12 hours of light a day. There are, however, two distinct seasons.
December to May is the warm season, with temperatures between 30 and 34°C, minimal rainfall and sea temperatures up to 28°C, ideal for snorkelling. At this time:
- land birds begin to nest
- sea turtles arrive to lay eggs
- giant tortoise eggs hatch
- it is mating followed by egg laying season for marine iguanas
After the arrival of the Humboldt Current, June to November is the cooler season. At this time, you may get stronger winds and cooler temperatures but will likely be sharing the experience with fewer other visitors. Expect:
- giant tortoises to migrate down to the lowlands to nest
- sea lion pupping to peak
- humpback whales to arrive
- to see mischievous juvenile penguins and sea lions along the shoreline
