Considered the cradle of Western civilisation, Greek history stretches back over 4,000 years. Since then this ruggedly beautiful landscape has stood at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa and been swept by the tides of successive empires yet managed to maintain its own distinctive culture throughout. What remains today is country of astounding historic wonders, sublime natural beauty and fascinating culture.
Although evidence of Greek civilisation stretches back as far as the bronze age, it is the flowering of Classical Greece in the 4th and 5th century BC that have left us with many of the architectural delights we enjoy on a holiday to Greece today. You’ll be astonished by the scale and grandeur of the Parthenon and Acropolis in Athens, fascinated by Olympia, the ancient home of the Olympic games and moved by the temple of Delphi in its spectacular mountain setting. Amongst these ancient wonders are some equally delightful later gems. You may be just as enthralled by the Venetian and Frankish influences on the charming seaside town of Nafplion, or the medieval medieval monasteries perched atop the lofty rock towers of Meteora.
With one of the longest coastlines in the world and over three quarters of the country dominated by mountains, Greece is a country of awe-inspiring vistas. Dramatic rocky headlands and peninsulas gaze out over golden crescent sands and sparkling waters to the thousands of islands beyond, whilst inland, craggy mountains and ravines are cloaked in hardy forests of pine, oak and chestnut and the scent of wild oregano, rosemary and thyme fill the air.
Greek cooking has been influenced over the centuries by ancient Greece, Rome and the Byzantine, Ottoman and Venetian empires, yet today Greek cuisine still retains a delicious simplicity based on excellent local produce. Fresh vegetables, fish, olive oil, wine, meat sing on the plate of simple tavernas and cafes, accompanied by delicious regional cheeses, bread, olives, herbs and, of course, the ubiquitous local olive oil.
