Tash Rabat is a beautifully located and well-preserved 15th century caravanserai built of local stone in the Naryn Province of Kyrgyzstan, located at an altitude of 3,200 meters.

Set among sweeping meadows and scree covered mountains, the low-lying structure consists of 31 dome-shaped rooms, which offered overnight shelter to travellers and merchants in their trading caravans.

In this remote and windswept location, surrounded by mountains on all sides, it is all too easy to imagine the Silk Road camel caravans making their way from China to the south-east over the treacherous Torugart Pass, which at 3,752 metres was often blocked by snow.
