Cu Chi Tunnels

Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels offer one of Vietnam’s most eye-opening experiences. A network of underground tunnels, hand-dug during the struggle for independence with the French, the tunnels are best known for their associations with the Viet Cong, who used them to strategically and methodically wage a guerrilla war against the government of South Vietnam supported by the US, Australia et al. Beneath Cu Chi there are around 75 miles of excavations, used as living quarters, hospitals and communication channels, part of a much bigger network that is thought to stretch across most of the country – for an experience that gives a taste of the real thing, crawl through a section of tunnel for yourself!

Seven Facts About
The Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels are part of a much more extensive network of tunnels that underlie much of the country

During times of heavy bombings, Viet Cong soldiers were forced to stay underground in the tunnels for days at a time

The tunnels were also used as hospitals, food stores, weapon caches, supply routes and communications channels

Underground theatres kept people entertained with song, dance and story-telling performances

It took 25 years to dig the whole network of tunnels that is underneath the Cu Chi region, all done by hand

Large-scale ground operations including thousands and thousands of US and Australian troops failed to locate any trace of the tunnels

The tunnels were so low and narrow that soldiers could only crawl through on their stomachs
