Fly overnight to Beijing, one of the world’s great ancient capitals and a home to some of the finest remnants of China's imperial past. Upon arrival transfer to your hotel for a three night stay. Take a rest at your hotel or start soaking up the local culture. (D)
Head to China’s most iconic sight – the Great Wall. Mutianyu Great Wall is a masterpiece of restoration makes for easy walking with breath-taking views over the surrounding countryside. On the way back to Beijing, stop to visit Beijing Jade Factory and learn more about one of China’s most symbolic and important materials – Jade. After lunch, visit the Summer Palace in the north of Beijing, built by Emperor Qianglong as a gift to his mother in the 18th century. Stroll along its charming garden before heading back to the city late afternoon. This evening, experience authentic Chinese cuisine with a special Peking Duck dinner. (B,L,D)
This morning, try your hand at making and flying traditional Chinese kites before heading to visit Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world and among the most well-known historical sites in China. Continue on to the Forbidden city, so called because it was off limits to all but the Emperor of the Ming and Qing dynasties for 500 years. In the afternoon, join a hands-on Chinese painting class before returning to your hotel. This evening, you may wish to join an optional Chinese Acrobat or Kung Fu show. (B,L)
Soak up the harmonious ambience of the Temple of Heaven where you can learn Chinese Yoo-Yoo or simply enjoy watching the locals practicing Tai-Chi, dancing and playing cards. Later, transfer to the airport for your flight to Xian. Upon arrival, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel. (B,L)
Spend the morning visiting the Terracotta Army, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th Century, where work is still ongoing to uncover more of these legendary statues. Next, stop by the Terracotta Factory where you will have the chance to sculpt your very own mini Warrior, before cycling along Xian’s ancient city walls. This evening, take in an optional light and fountain show. (B,L,D)
Fly to Chengdu for a three night stay. Depending on your time of arrival the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or start exploring the city. (B,L)
Head to Dujiangyan this morning and visit the Panda Base to see these charismatic animals being reared in wooded surroundings reminiscent of their natural habitat. A world-class research facility and conservation centre, the Panda Centre is also a primary destination to get a closer look at these endangered bears. You may wish to participate in optional panda volunteering and panda handling (ages 12 – 65 only, subject to availability). Later, visit the Shu Brocade and Embroidery Museum and experience further how these richly decorative fabrics are created before having the opportunity to purchase a piece yourself. Return to Chengdu where this evening you may wish to join an optional face-changing show. (B,L)
Enjoy a day at leisure in Chengdu where you can relax or further explore. You may wish to take an optional tour to the New Century Global Centre Waterpark (subject to seasonal opening), Happy Valley Chengdu theme park or Chengdu Giant Panda Base. These can be booked and paid for in Chengdu via your local guide. (B)
